Tech Tools

So many technology tools exist that help librarians and educators to be more productive, creative, and effective in providing service and education to patrons and students. On this page, I’ll be compiling some of my favorite online tools that I have either used or plan to use on behalf of fostering information literacy, work productivity, and/or promoting books.

This is by no means a finished page; it’s just a starter list which I’ll be adding to as I come across and use more tools. So, for now, from A to Z, I like:

Acrobat.com: includes file sharing and storage, PDF converter, online word processor, and web conferencing

Animoto: analyzes your music and images and creates a unique video; no two videos are the same (view my Animoto: Mysteries at Your Library)

Blist: easy interface for creating databases

Bubbleshare: for sharing photos and the stories that go with them (view my Bubbleshare slideshow: I went to the Zoo and…)

Del.icio.us: join the Del.icio.us social bookmarking community and manage your bookmarks and view the bookmarks of others in your network (view my Del.icio.us account)

Diigo: social bookmarking and knowledge sharing community for managing bookmarks and viewing friends and group bookmarks

Drop.io: simple private filesharing

Flickr: photo sharing

GoodReads: a book community that enables users to get book recommendations from people they know (view my GoodReads Bookshelf (which is largely a pared down version of my Library Thing and Google Books libraries))

Google Books: from Google, provides a wealth of information about books from various sources (view my Google Books Library)

Google Docs: from Google, includes a web-based word processor and spreadsheet

Jing Project: from TechSmith, Jing’s something of a lite version of Camtasia. Jing makes it simple to create screenshots and screencasts and to share them online

Jott: Use Jott to transcribe any voice message into a blog post or an e-mail or text message.

Library Thing: Catalogs books easily and quickly online, tag books, join communities, and find friends (view my Library Thing catalog)

Live Skydrive: File storage (5 GB) and filesharing service

Scrapblog: for creating digital scrapbooks that are easily shared; fix memories online by uploading pictures and choosing how to organize them (view my book-related Scrapblog: Lit Full of Wombat Wit)

Tumblr: Create a tumblelog and quickly share links, video, and more

Voicethread: create online discussion (While Voicethread can be used to foster discussion around anything, I (not surprisingly) used it to create a booktalk. View my Voicethread booktalk: The Looking Glass Wars.)

Worldcat.org: find books at libraries near you using the Worldcat.org global catalog of library collections; WorldCat.org continues to add social features as well

Zamzar: Keep Zamzar in mind in the library, because it may be a lifesaver for a patron (or yourself) someday. Zamzar is easy to use and will convert Word files to PDFs, Works files to Word, etc. Zamzar handles text, image, audio, and video file format conversions (and it is available without any pesky downloads).

Zoho: online office suite
